Definition of documentary styles

From reading these articles it has enabled me to widen my knowledge of the diferent documentary and photojouranalism modes which will allow me to make a more educated disision as to what modes our own documentary film should include.

From reading Representing reality: issues and concepts in documentary by Bill Nichols I feel that in general i agree with Platos theory that docmentaries show the reality of societies. However, this is not always the case in documentaries as some modes of documentary such as mocumentaries are destinctly designed to portray a faulse reality to its audience. Although, some mocumentaries such a BBC's Lifes Too Short choose to empahise and publicise the outstanding discrimination within society through the form of humour.

Dealing in reality, what defines our everyday world, photographic truth?

From reading this it has made me very aware of the power of photojournalism especially through the way it can manipulate its audience into believing a faulse truth, simply through the staging of a photograph. For example Jeff Wall is well known for using actors within his photography but directs them into looking like pieces of decisive moment photography. This means that he is able to manipulate the audience into feeling certain emotions from his pictures, unlike Henri Cartier- Bresson who uses decisive moment photography and captures the truth within society.

Yin And Yang Theory

From reading this about this technique have enabled myself to understand how to create an industry standard piece of photojournalsim through the use of juxtaposistion of elements within my photos interms of depth of field and lighting. This technique can be applied to both stills and flim when making our docuemntary

Responsability and photography

From reading this artical I feel that I have developed a strong oppinion to the subject and feel that it is a photojounalists responsability to portray the truth about the events within society and feel that it is vital that the general public is aware of these events. I do not feel that it is a photographers responability to protect the general public from the terrors of the world.

The Media, povert and public opinion in the UK

After reading this article it is cleare to see that media rarely expresses the seriousness of poverty, especially on the news. Therefore, connecting this with the previous article (Responsablity and Photography) I feel that this subject is one the photojournalists and film makers should portary as something serious and therefore I believe that this is a responablity of photojournalists.

Digital Raw Capture

By reading this article it has enabled me to develop a higher understanding of what Raw processing and capture was and how by capturing in Raw allows photojournalists to take higher quality photographs that can be use across all mediums. As well as this Raw processing is useful for me as it allows me to edit my photographs to a higher standard and overall creating better quality photographs.

In general I feel that the sourec-path- goal schema is nessacery withing documentary film making as it allows the audience to follow the primary's journey more easily and clearly, as it follows a clear beginning middle and end structure. However, this path does not need to be followed as the uncertainty of the story creates excitment for the audience.

The Interview

Reading this article has allowed me to develop an understanding of how to ask our interviewees the correct questions in order to recieve the information and answers that we as documentary film makers want. Therefore, by collecting together our in depth research we will already have a high understanding of our subject and concequently direct our questions to focus on the issues that we would like to address.
