I am highly interested in observetional, decisive moment photo journalism as i belive that this gives more truth to the picture. Therefore, my Photo Essay will be done in an observational mode and taking inspiration from photo journalists that use this same style such as Henri - Cartier - Bresson and Dorothea Lange.
Henri - Cartier - Bresson
This photograph by Henri - Cartier - Bresson is in the same obsevatoional mode that i will be using my- self. However this particular picture has inspied me to experiment with the shutter speed to capture the movement of the subject or object in which i am photogaphing. From previous photo shoots i am also aware that i like shooting in black and white. Although this will be done post-production I will need to ensure that the ISO is set to the correct level (100/200) to create a high quality contrast in my photogarphs. I will also be using the RAW + L setting to get also create a higher quality photo.
Dorothea Lange Best known for her photo journalism work during the American 'Great Depression', Dorothea Lange captured the emotions of the migrants involved. However, her photos were not just shot in an obervational mode, but they were highly political as well. This political mode is also another style of photo journalism that i could experiment with for my photo essay. Lange's 'Migrant Mother' does not only capture the same contrast levels that i myself wouold like to create, but it has also inspired me through the way in which the subject is framed, as even though Lange has chosen a central framing of her subject, she has used the children within the picture to frame the mother. Therefore when I am taking pictures for my photo essay I will consider the way in which I intend to frame the subject or object. | ![]() ![]() |
