Defining Possesions

For this photo essay I decided that I wanted to focus on the thing that define us as a person and therefore focused my attention on the possesions we hold and carry with us. i then developed this further by deciding to experiment with the framing of my photos by not including peoples faces and simply focusing on there hands.

However, as i was shooting in a decisive moment style it was sometimes hard to focus the camera quickly, as well as choosing the appropriet appature and shutter speed that i wanted. Therefore I decided to stay in a single place and wait for people to come into the shot that i had already pre set.

RAW Edting and Photo Details

Notebook: No editing

By using an F number that wasn't too small, nor too big, I was able to have a sharp focus on my primary focus, but yet still have a soft focuas on the subjects around them without the background becoming completely out of focus.

Umberella: Increase in brightness and slight increase in saturation to make the colours of the umberella more vibrant (didn't use vibrance because it gave an un-natural look to the picture. Also set sharpening to the indusrty setting 60.

By setting the F number in the middle like my previous photograph i was able to achieve the same sharp focus on the primary focal piont and soft focus for the background. However, by puting the shutter speed to one second I was able to capture the movement of the subject. I feel that by using the slower shutter speed to capture movement helps to add life and personality to the people within the photograph.

However my appeture was too small and therefore not enoungh light was let in to the lense leaving my photograph under exposed.

Phone: Decrease in exposure and slight decrease in brightness and contrast.

I set the camera shuter speed to half a second in order to create a very slight feel of movement and life to the photo. However, unfortunatly my F number was too small and therefore my main focal point was not in focus. Although, I still feel that because of this it creates a distance between the viewer and the subject within the photograph which I found interesting.

Blind man: Decrease in brightness and slight increase in staturation.

By using a large appature number i was able to focus through the people in front of the lense and creating a soft focus and a focal point on the man at the back of the shot. I feel that this technique helps to dictate to the viewer where to look within the picture, which I feel is a very powerful technique to use within photojournalism.

Woman eating: Increase in sharpening amout and detail.

By using a large appeture number I was able to create a shallow depth of field photograph in which the primary focal piont is in sharp focus. As well as, this by setting the camera too a fast shutter speed I was able to capture a exact moment within the subjects life.

Reading: Decraese in exposure and slight increase in brightness.

By using a small F number I was able to create a shallow depth of field within my photograph, creating a clear focal point within the image and making the backgorund out of focus.

Dog leads: Increase in vinrance and clarity to make the colourful dog leads stand out against the womens dark coat.

I feel that this photograph has a really nice appeal to it due to the shallow depth of field focusing on the womens hand and dog leads. As well as this I also feel that by using a small F number I have been enabled to show the transition from the main focal point to the other subjects within the photograph.

Couple: Decrease in exposure and increase in amount and masking sharpening.

In this photograph I have again made the appeture even larger making the depth of field even smaller so the couple are the only subjects that are in focus. However, by doing this too much light was let in through the lense resulting in the picture being over exposed and the whites being too bright.

Walking stick: Slight decrease in exposure as the white jacket was over exposed.

For this photograph I decided to use a slightly smaller appeture than the previous photograph as I wanted to experiment whether the focal point doesn't necessarilry have to be in foucs. From this i found that as long as the main focal point is big enough it does not always have to be in sharp focus.

Poppy Appeal: Slight decrease in exposure.

For this photograph i chose an F number that wasn't too small or to large as even though I wanted my primary focal point to be in shrap focus, I still wanted the background to be prtly in focus as I felt that it would help to show the atmoshere within the street.

Money Giving: Decrease in brightness, slight increase in recovery and contrast and increase in colour sharpening to make the red of the poppys stand out.

For this photograph I really wanted to focus on the action of the lady giving to charity, and therefore used a large appature  to create a very shallow depth of field in order for the background to be completely out of focus.

Guitar: Slight decrease in exposure.

By using a larger F number I was able to focus past the guitar, but yet still retained the guitar as the focal point of the image. However, by increasing the appeture more light was able to come in through the lense causing the photograph to become over exposed.
