Relationships and Isolation

The location that I decided to shoot at was Porstmouth Harbour. This was because not only would it be a good chance to get to know the place better for our potential documentary about Portsmouth Docks but also because it is so diverse in the type and amount of people that are there. Things happen there that no where else in Britain you can find like commercial fishing and the docking yard as well as well as a strong navel based community that are very patriotic. Some themes of which I try and portray in the pictures.

The Cannon 450d is very versitile and can be put to very good use if you know the camera well enough to take pcitures which are visually stunning as well as theoretically brilliant. However aethetics are only one ingredient to being a good photojournalist. This is captureing the moment and I try to demonstrate this especially in photo number 2. This was taken in low light conditions outside at around 6000-7500 Kelvins (a measure of colour temperature) So this resulted in me putting the ISO up to 3200 and a white balance to overcast. I used the automatic setting for White Balance on this occasion because I felt that it would make it easier to shoot pictures quicker and not lose the moment because of fiddling round with the white balance.

The problem with the high ISO however made the picture of low quality and very grainy. So in the editing phase I adjusted the Noise Reduction to a level which I thought was acceptable before I adjusted the Blues in the Hue and Saturation to make the man in the blue coat stand out more.

What I learnt very much so when taking pictures at night it is amazing how much one setting you change effects the out come of the quality and that of the lighting levels and that I now fully appreciate some of the automatic settings in situations where you need to capture the moment of that person's emotion in that one picture.

A photo in which I was experimenting with was photo number 9. In this photo I experimented with the shutter speed. In this I changed the shutter speed to a low setting by which the camera only starts to become shakey which is about 1/30th of a second. With the motion of my self and of the woman collecting the rubbish it made it quite blurred. This, along with angle of the actual photo which is tilted to the right a bit makes it like that you are there looking at her through your own eyes and not a camera. This then creates an engagement with the audience.

In the editing phase of RAW I made it my challenge to try and experiment with as many and as much of a range of settings to try and gain a full understanding of the effects and principles of each setting on the photo. Bellow are a few examples in terms of how I edited my pictures

RAW Editing

For most of images there only was very minor changes to each. They were as follows...

*Looking Out*

I Adjusted the Noise reduction because the image was taken at night it made the image really quite grainy. So to counter this I put the Noise Reduction right up to 100.

*Travelling Couple*

In this picture I just finely tuned the hue and saturation of the blues and yellows to make them stand out slightly more. This creates a kind of yellow lighting tinge to the photo as a whole which gives it in turn a more dirty appearance as if the place where they are is dirty and a bit dingy.

*Lonely Seamant*

I turned down the vibrants of most of the colour saturation and hue in this picture. This gave it a very cold effect to it. Making the picture look harsh and conditions really cold. This I think adds to how alone the seaman looks in the photo as the background is made to look desolate and this was what I was trying to get across in the photo.

*A Couple Enjoying the View*

In this picture I turned the vibrance of the blues and greens right up so that the couple and their clothes themselves stood out to the eye so that it would straight away focus to them being the focal point of the image.

*Rubbish Woman*

Took in with a slow shutter speed, creating a fluid and slightly blurred photo of the woman collecting rubbish. The aperture setting were also quite high, getting most of the background in focus. This creates a setting and a connection to how the subject is feeling. Caged.

*Man Smoking*

For this I made the hue and saturation of the blues very distinct and put them to around 80.
