The aim of our promotional material is to attract people to our flash based website www.wix.com/fragilefocus/home, with this in mind I wanted to come up with promotional ideas that direct attention to our website. Once people visit our site they will be able to find out more about the film and film festival.

Market Stall:

To promote our film we could use merchandising as a way of building our brand image. My idea is to have a stall set up in Winchester High Street or in the Student Union building two weeks before the film festival event, at this stall we will have posters, flyers and business cards for people to take as well as goodie bags filled with merchandise such as pens, pencils and sweets all with the fragile focus logo and our flash based website url on. This will create more traffic to our website where people can find out more about our film.

Stall hire:

To hire the stall in the High Street it will cost £40, to save some money we could change to Middle Brook Street which is only £30. Failing this we could set our stall up outside the Student Union to attract students and lecturers to the event.

Stall kit:-

  • Business cards
  • Flyers
  • Posters
  • Banners
  • High visibility vests

 Business Cards:

My first idea about promotion was the use of business cards. Business cards are very versatile in the number of situations in which they can promote our documentary. The aim of the business card is to promote the Facebook page of the production company, members of the public can then find out more about the documentary from this page.

Our first business card design was made by our marketing team, then after a feedback process we decided to alter the design as a group. The new design is simpler and has a clear layout with all the important information.

High visibility vests:

As our documentary will require filming in night conditions I think it would be beneficial to purchase high visibility vests for our production crew.

I thought that the visibility vests could double up as safety equipment and on the shoot promotion, my plan is to have the logo and name printed on the back of the vests so that members of the public that see us filming will know who we are.

I found the cheapest place to get custom printed vests was Hivis.co.uk, the cost per vest worked out below £6 so it was well within our budget.

Teaser poster:

A teaser poster is one of the most basic but effective forms of promotion. It can be used in a range of locations and builds hype and awareness around the product.

I found that the majority of teaser posters are very simplistic and have to be ascetically attractive. With these points in mind I designed a poster that reflects the essence of our documentary. I used very symbolic colours of black and yellow, although they are not the colours of UK taxi's they are instantly recognisable due to popular culture displaying the New York taxi colour scheme. There were three points of information that I wanted to display on the poster, title, what it is and when it is. For this I simple wrote the tittle, added a descriptive word and then wrote the date of the festival.

Web 2.0:

Web 2.0 refers to the change in the way people use the web, rather than an advancement in technology. Web 2.0 actively integrates the user into the website allowing the sharing of information, user generated content and design.

An example of the difference between web 1.0 and 2.0 is the two encyclopaedia websites Encyclopedia-Britannica Online and Wikipedia. Britannica has a 100 full-time editors and over a 1000 certified contributors ensuring that the content is factually based, this is representative of web 1.0 which allows the viewer to look and explore the information but not interact with it. Wikipedia allows users to edit and upload more information, although this damages the reliability of its information it does allow improved diversity of information and views tend to be balanced.

We could exploit web 2.0 by allowing visitors to our website to upload photos and comments meaning we would have valuable feedback on our ideas and also improving communication with our audience.

 Interactive flyers

One way to get people visiting the site is to give them an incentive to do so. My idea is to have flyers that have individual codes on, these codes would allow the user to enter a lottery type competition on our website. Not only would this increase the traffic to our site but it would also give us an opportunity for audience interaction.
