1st Concept
Our Main idea was developed from Samuel Henshaw's docks concept, we decided that it was the most original and topical from our selection. The concept is about the Southampton Dock Yard and what happens behind its gates, how it operates, why its important and who keeps it going. Instead of us making a unoriginal expository or participatory documentary which has been done many times before we wanted to take an artistic approach and make it into a semi poetic and observational one. Our film will cover a fixed time period (A week or month) at the docks and will be structured in a linear fashion.
Unfortunately after weeks of research and conacting many people, we weren't granted with permission to film at any of our selected dock stations. Therefore we had to come up with other ideas.
2nd Concept
Our other main idea was looking into the background lives of taxi drivers. After Martin Wilde got into contact with a taxi driver, Mohammed, in Southampton, he began to explore further into the background of his life story. Mohammed told us that he had changed his teaching job in Pakistan to become a taxi driver in England to ensure his family a better life. We found this story really interesting and wondered how many other taxi drivers were in the same situation. As we would want to get really involved with our subjects, our documentary would be in the style of a participatory documentary.
Cabbie follows the day to day issues and events of Mohammed, a taxi driver who has left his home country of Pakistan to follow his wife into the United Kingdom. Having previously been a teacher in his home country, we hope to highlight the issue of unemployment and race for people in a similar position to Mohammed.
Taxi drivers all have their own interesting story, and we hope to tell them.
